I met Sophia in first grade, such a sweet, sweet little girl with pretty brown hair and a great smile. We bonded quickly. Our friendship continued through 6th grade. I met with her once a week to work on reading.

The prin­ci­pal asked me if I would tutor Daniel, an early ele­men­tary school stu­dent. Tutor may be the wrong word. I was at the school to tutor stu­dents, but she actu­ally said that Daniel needed some­one to be nice to him. He’s had a chal­leng­ing life.

It makes me sad that nothing seems to improve for Kansas City public schools, except the development of of a few successful charters. Some of the candidates running for school board may be spending a lot of energy arguing for a public school system that doesn’t seem interested in implementing radical changes.
